The Most Famous Terracotta Cupola in the World
When, in 1418, Brunelleschi proposed the cupola project to the city authorities of Florence, nobody believed that could be turn into reality. Many thought it would have collapsed under its own weight. Through engineering genius, not only did it stay up, but 600 years later, the terracotta tiles have withstood the test of time, demonstrating the strength and everlasting beauty of a terracotta roof.
Nevertheless, even these tiles need replacing every now and then and therefore the new city authorities have turned to local manufacturers for replacement tiles made to exact specifications. This area of Tuscany has been making terracotta tiles since 1308 and they supply not just roof tiles but the richest floor tiles as well, as used in the Uffizi Gallery (yes, it’s the same company)
